Sorry for the repost but I had an issue with my alias and had to repost per
customer service.
I'm running across a weird issue that I can't figure out. I trying to create
a maintenance plan on two of my SQL 2000 Servers. I run throught the wizard
and get to the screen to setup the backup job and when I go to select the
delete files older than option I notice that that this blank. Typically it
has dyas, hours, and weeks here. The file extension is blank as well. Aslo
the number scroll for number of files does not work correctly down is up.
Any thought on this. This is my only SQl server I've seen this on. I have 5
other SQL servers that work fine when creating a maintenance job but not on
these two servers and really need to resolve the issue on these servers.

Based on the symptom, it seems the "BackupDirectory " value of the
following registry key is corrupted or missing:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\<instance
name>\MSSQLServer (named instance)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\ MSSQLServer (default
instance)
If it is missing, please right click above Key->New->String Value, change
the name to BackupDirectory, and change it value to the proper path such as:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\backup
NOTE: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

Maintenance Plan Issue

I'm running across a weird issue that I can't figure out. I trying to creat
e
a maintenance plan on two of my SQL 2000 Servers. I run throught the wizard
and get to the screen to setup the backup job and when I go to select the
delete files older than option I notice that that this blank. Typically it
has dyas, hours, and weeks here. The file extension is blank as well. Aslo
the number scroll for number of files does not work correctly down is up.
Any thought on this. This is my only SQl server I've seen this on. I have

other SQL servers that work fine when creating a maintenance job but not on

Based on the symptom, it seems the "BackupDirectory " value of the
following registry key is corrupted or missing:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Mi
crosoft SQL Server\<instance
name>\MSSQLServer (named instance)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MS
SQLServer\MSSQLServer (default
instance)
If it is missing, please right click above Key->New->String Value, change
the name to BackupDirectory, and change it value to the proper path such as:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\backup
NOTE: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall Windows. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems
resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use
Registry Editor at your own risk.

Maintenance Plan Configuration
Hi,
I've just started using SQL Server 2005 Standard and I'm moving database
across from SQL Server 2000.
I have setup a maintenance plan to backup my databases in the new
maintenance plan tool / SSIS but I cannot find any option to delete old
database backup files like I have in SQL Server 2000.
I found the Clean-up History task, but this does not appear to be related to
deleting database backup files.
Can someone please point me in the right direction for configuring this
option so I do not need to write my own job to delete old backup files.John
add a "Maintenance Clean Up" task to your Maintenance plan. This will
give you the option to delete old backfiles or logfiles.

you can create Maintenance plan for this database server on other server.

Maintaing a connection across pages (Persistent)
I've only been workign with Database programming for 6 months or so, specfically SQL Server. I've setup a site through a hosting company that is pretty reputable and allows me plent of space/bandwidth etc. However, they've recently been having problems with one of their servers (the one I'm co hosted on) as an "abornamlly" large amount of connections are being opened up on their server.
I realize that SQL Server is designed to handle large amounts of traffic and my humble little site probably isn't killing it with shear traffic, but I'm wondering if my programming practicies are sub par and causing problems.
I'm coding in ASP (work hasn't given us the chance to migrate to .net). Anyway my site is getting some 30 - 40k hits a day on the actual web portion and probably another 10-20k on backed stuff - all which open up database connections to do their work.
I've had locks and blocks routinely because of this and I'm afraid I'm just going about this all wrong.
So I'm wondering if there is a way to maintain an established connection in ASP across multiple pages and/or sessions so I don't have to constantly drop and reconnect to the db?

I don't think that this is what you would want to do. Database connection pools would normally be the responsibility of an applications server (something like BEA's WebLogic). You could write your own custom (COM+) connection pool manager, but it's a fair amount of work and would only make a difference if your site were generating an order of magnitude more traffic.

Probably your best starting point is to tune your T-SQL, avoid using dynamic SQL (use stored procs), ensure you have adequate indexing and avoid mistakes like pulling back an entire recordset when you only need one or two records (ie, use a WHERE clause).
