I created a SQL Server 2000 database maintenance plan with the wizard.
I selected integrity checks and complete backups for my database and
completed the requiremenents.
I received the following error listed below.
Executed as user: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42
000]
(Error 22029). The step failed.

For example, if you have a tran log backup job and you have mixed full
recovery model databases with simple model, you will get an error (even
though the backups completed, the error will be thrown). Its always a good
idea to separate out the system, full model user, bulk mode user and simple
model user database backups into separate plans, and configure each
appropriately.

Maintenance Plan "fails"..
Thanks in advance for any insight.
On occasion, one of my schedule jobs will "fail", in that all tasks
complete, but it still reports failure. Strangely enough, nothing is written
to SQL Server log, but I do have the following entry in the Event Viewer:
"SQL Server Scheduled Job 'DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Non-Great
Plains Daily Backup'' (0x01BF5D1C32E9FF418D67E99A77A4A014) - Status:
Failed - Invoked on: 2004-06-08 20:00:00 - Message: The job failed. The Job
was invoked by Schedule 35 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1
(Step 1)."
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

The only thing in the report file is that it was unable to delete one of the
database backups. Other than that, all of the steps completed. Would that
cause the job to think it failed?

seperate job, that way if deleting a previous days backup failed it wouldn't
look like the databases didn't get backed up since that would be a seperate
task with its own status.

to SQL Server log, but I do have the following entry in the Event Viewer:
"SQL Server Scheduled Job 'DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Non-Great
Plains Daily Backup'' (0x01BF5D1C32E9FF418D67E99A77A4A014) - Status:
Failed - Invoked on: 2004-06-08 20:00:00 - Message: The job failed. The Job
was invoked by Schedule 35 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1
(Step 1)."
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

The only thing in the report file is that it was unable to delete one of the
database backups. Other than that, all of the steps completed. Would that
cause the job to think it failed?

seperate job, that way if deleting a previous days backup failed it wouldn't
look like the databases didn't get backed up since that would be a seperate
task with its own status.

Maintenace Plan Best Practice
My question is recommendation for setting up maintenace plans that are safe and complete. What do you recommned I do for setting up a plan that backs up, and deletes old files older than 5 days. Should I do anything else and why?

If you want to backup the database and delete the old backup files you can create a maintenance plan to backup dbs and another task to "Cleanup task" to remove old .bak files.........refer this link,

Should I index and at what intervals, should I shrink the logs and databases and when and why?
