Hi, I have a scheduled maintenance plan that backs up my database (SQL 2000). The db is 108 Meg. Usually the backup files are around 89 Meg and the transaction log backups are around 4.5 Megs.
The problem is that every once a while the backup fails with the following error:
[Microsoft SQL-DMO (ODBC SQLState: 42000)] Error 3202: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Write on 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\CRM_db_200312230100.BAK' failed, status = 112. See the SQL Server error log for more details.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
What usually happens is that the last backup that has failed has a size of 9 or 8 Gigs!
My guess is that a backup file gets corrupt (the size increases to 8 Gigs) and the server runs out of space and wont be able to do more backups. However I cant figure out why the backup file size increases to and gets corrupt.
Can anyone help me?What does the error log say...
did you a dbcc checkdb?|||Thanks for your reply, the error log says:
1.Source:Backup
BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE [MYDB] TO DISK = N'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\MYDB_db_200312230100.BAK' WITH INIT , NOUNLOAD , NOSKIP , STATS = 10, NOFORMAT

It looks like somthing happended to the last backup and the size increased to 8 Gigs and the disk ran out of space, but I can't figure why this happenes every once in a while.
Thanks

Have you tried to do that?|||I havn't but there must be somthing wrong with it, since its 8 gig instead of 80 Megs, plus when I deleted it and made a backup manualy the size of the new backup was the regular 80 megs

Maintenance Plan "fails"..
Thanks in advance for any insight.
On occasion, one of my schedule jobs will "fail", in that all tasks
complete, but it still reports failure. Strangely enough, nothing is written
to SQL Server log, but I do have the following entry in the Event Viewer:
"SQL Server Scheduled Job 'DB Backup Job for DB Maintenance Plan 'Non-Great
Plains Daily Backup'' (0x01BF5D1C32E9FF418D67E99A77A4A014) - Status:
Failed - Invoked on: 2004-06-08 20:00:00 - Message: The job failed. The Job
was invoked by Schedule 35 (Schedule 1). The last step to run was step 1
(Step 1)."
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

The only thing in the report file is that it was unable to delete one of the
database backups. Other than that, all of the steps completed. Would that
cause the job to think it failed?

Thanks,
MorganAny messages in the report file? (Did you specify a report file, btw?)

The only thing in the report file is that it was unable to delete one of the
database backups. Other than that, all of the steps completed. Would that
cause the job to think it failed?

mail without mapi
Hi All,
I've got a SQL cluster in its own domain that I need to get notifications
from when the maintenance jobs fail. If I can't use an outlook mapi client
to send mail how can I get notified that jobs fail? Someone said I could use
SMTP mail but I don't know how to do this. Please help.
TIA!!
jj
Use xpsmtp from www.sqldev.net. I have used this in clustered environments
for a long time and have had zero problems.

mail client and dts send mail task
Hi,
Is it required to have microsoft outlook client up-and-running to send mail from dts package?
I have a dts package which send email if job fail or success. will it work fine if someone by mistek close outlook client running on server?
please reply.
Ram.No, the outlook client does not have to be running to use send-mail in a dts package.
The outlook client needs to be installed on the server and the profile needs to be created for the user context that will be running the dts package.
Here is where the confusion typically lies. When you run a DTS package interactively, the security context is who-ever you are logged in as. As such, it is relatively easy to debug. What most people don't understand is that if the DTS package is running based on some automated feature (timer, or another application starting it) the DTS package typically runs under the SQL Agent ID (Check the logon-id of the user that starts SQL Agent in control panel Services). You will need to use a specific ID, rather than system. This is because to use SQL Mail, you will have to interactively log-on as that user and configure outlook. Once you have done that, the SQL Agent will be able to send and receive e-mail without you being logged in.
Good luck.|||Originally posted by rmillman

Much thanks for your reply. explains me how dts send email . nothing to do with up-and-running mail client . it sends email internally useing agent.
cool.
Good luck.|||There's a great email extended procedure you can get that will allow you to send email without installing the outlook client on all your SQL servers. You can go this link for details: http://sqldev.net/xp/xpsmtp.htm
We have implemented this at LexisNexis by writing a wrapper procedure that calls the extended procedure. This provides a higher level security. You can call this from within a DTS package or via a job step within a scheduled job. We've been using this for quiet awhile with great success in all our maintenance plans for backups.
