Maintain datatype for reporting services from OLAP

I'm trying to extract data from my OLAP and present it using reporting services. The problem is that all the values extracted from the OLAP seems converted into string instead of keeping their original type. Am I doing something wrong in the setting? Please let me know how can I check the data type in reporting services. Thanks!

I haven't seen this conversion. The datatype that is set in the properties for the dimension attribute is what I see in my report. Check in Analysis Services for the attribute properties datatype that is set there and verify that something that you expect as a number is defined as a number.

There isn't a property in Reporting Services that tells you the data type, but you can check to see if something is numeric by using the ISNUMERIC(Field) to determine if the field returned in the MDX is seen by RS is a number.

You can also convert the field to what ever datatype you need in Reporting Services.

David

|||Dear David,

I would like to try checking up the attribute properties datatype. However, I can't find anywhere that I can do this in the SQL Server Management Studio. Could you please give me a guide for that?

Regards,
Alex|||

Hi Alex,

Unfortunately you can't see them in SS Management Studio, but you can via BI Studio, you will have to run BI studio and if you don't have a project choose File/Open and then Analysis Services Database. Click the dimension, and then look at the properties for the Attribute Heirarchy, go to the Source/Key Column and click the ... This will show you the data type that is listed for the source column.

This should match the column that is in your DSV that is created for the project.

David

|||Hi David,

Thanks for your speedy response first. Actually, I have done couples of time of what you've mentioned. I am certainly sure that BI studio show me the datatype is what I expected. However, once I get into the reporting services. All of them becomes string datatype. I need to use cint and other function to convert them back to their supposed datatype. Is there anything wrong with my MDX statement? I just use the drap & drag approach to create the DataSet for reporting services.

Regards,
Alex|||Hi David,

I've just done a few more tests. I found that the datatype are maintained when it comes to the reporting services. I use the IsNumeric and IsDate functions to check for this. However, the problem is even they're in the correct type. It seems that the sorting and formating function are not handling them well. First, I would like to order by an integer value field and I got the list like this. 1, 10, 2, 20, 3, 30, 4 and so on. Second, if I change the format code of a date field, it doesn't change at all. I do this by right click on the textbox containing the date and choose properties -> format tab and input d into the format code field. Do you have any idea about this? Thanks!

Regards,
Alex

main page blank after new install ?

Hi,
I installed reporting services on 2003 (IIS6, front page ext, asp.net, no
vb.net). When connecting to http://server im directed to
http://server/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx . The main form header shows HOME /
MY SUBSCRIPTIONS / HELP but the main page is blank.
Anyone know why and how to sort ?
Thanks
Scottim just wondering if its because i didnt install VB.net 03 so the report
designer is not available.|||on the hosting server i enter http://localhost and get the Report Manager
with all the options.
From a client i get a blank home page. I assume because nothing is setup yet
which is fine.

mailing labels in SQL Server Reporting Services

I am creating a report to be used to print mailing labels. Size 1" x 2 5/8" (3 columns of 10 labels). I seem to have everything but the vertical spacing working properly. I have used a rectangle set to the size of the labels which contains a list box containing text boxes containing expressions to pull in the fields. Some of the street addresses are two lines with the majority being only one line.

I have joined the two fields containing the street addresses and inserted a new line command so each field will print on its own line but yet be contained within the same text box. Everything except the text box containing the street addresses are set to not increase or decrease. My problem is that on the pages of the report where labels vary between the one and two line street addresses the labels tend to creep down which in some cases causes data to be printed over two labels. Any ideas on what I can do to format these to print properly?

Thanks

How did you create 3 columns mailing labels? Is there a way in reporting services to display the data in 3 columns?

Thanks

|||

Report Properties menu on the Layout Tab the first section lets you specify the number of columns and spacing for your report. I then set up a rectangle the size of the label, added a list box and the fields for the data to be shown.

|||

I changed the layout, and added 2 columns to my report, my fields are in a list control, when i preview the report it just shows in one column, the other column is not even displayed, do you know what I could be doing wrong, I am sure it is something silly?

Thanks again

Espy

|||In preview I also only see one column but if you use the print preview you should see all columns. (Took me a few tries to get all this figured out too!). Hope that helps.|||

I did the print layout and get a black screen with nothing in it

When I printed the report it just printed one column

I am not sure what I am doing wrong

Any other suggestions?

thanks for your help

|||

Sorry, I may not be much help in explaining your results; but, below are the Layout settings I have used and I have walked back through the steps: I started a blank report; went to Report - Report Properties - Layout and set the following

Columns: 3; Spacing 0.125 in

Page Width: 8.5in; Page Height: 11 in

Left margin: 0.25in; right margin: 0.125in

Top margin: 0.4in; Bottom margin: 0.5in

Then back on the Layout tab for the report itself I inserted a rectangle and sized it to fit within what would be the actual margins of a label. Then, I adjusted the body of the report itself by dragging the right side towards the left to match the right edge of the rectangle. The actual columns began to show on my report page when I pulled the right side of the body over towards the left is when (sorry, I may not be explaining this very well). Hope this helps.

Good luck.

|||

I was able to make it work

I tried that. now its comin in 2 column, but value that came in the first column is repeating in second column. But in print preview only the second column is showing. adjusted the rectangle. Some silly mistakes will be there. Then, I need 8 labels in 1 column, but only 6 is coming. I increased the report size. but no use. Please help

|||Sorry for the delay in responding to you. Did you get your question resolved? If not, I reviewed the previous posts and then recreated a label. Make sure that in your report properties (menu choice Report - Report Properties - Layout) you have specified the number of columns (8 in your case), your page width and height to match the sheet of labels, and the margins to match the sheet of labels. I then refined the Body of the report; inserted a list box linked to the data source - and sized to match the size of the label; inserted a rectangle sized to match the size of the label and then inserted text boxes with the fields I want to show. From there its just fine-tuning the margins, padding, etc. Please note that I never did get a response addressing my original question though. Hope this helps to answer your question.|||

I am very thankful to you. I got it in a nice maaner by increasing the page width. But I integrated to the program it is not showing that alignment. I am thinking font mismatch will b there . But its not working for me. If u hav any idea pls suggest that. That will help me very much. I am Sure. Thanks alot for ur proper guidings........

Hi

My reports are coming correctly. But the pbms am facing is that,

If am giving page range in print preview(1-2) then 1st page 'll be showing and 2nd page's 1st column [ If 1-3 then 1st,2nd and 3rd page's 1st col; 1-1 means 1st page's ist column]

if it is coming row wise it 'll be helpful.

Mailing Labels

Is it possible to do mailing labels through Reporting Services. I can't
figure out a way to display three columns of information per page'?
anybody have any examples?I set up a report to print Avery 5162 labels yesterday. I had to play with
the margins, font size, textbox positioning, and textbox spacing to get the
data to fit on the labels correctly. After adding a blank report and creating
a dataset here are the steps I took to create the report.
Hope it helps. 1) Change Report Properties Margins to: 0.125in, 0.125in,
0.825in, 0in (Your's will probably be different.)
2) Change Body Layout Properties: Columns=2, ColumnSpacing=0.25in, Size=4in,
1.375in(the label size)
3) Add a List object: Location=0in, 0in, Size=4in, 1.375in(the label size)
4) Add a Rectangle object: Location=0in, 0in, Size=4in, 1.375in(the label
size)
5) Add and arrange data fields When you first view the report on the Preview
tab it will only show one column. You'll need to switch to Print Preview to
see the two column report.|||Thanks.. .I actually already did practically the same thing.... take care...

Mailing Labels

Is there any practical method of using Reporting Services for generating
mailing labels? For example, Avery XXXX labels.
Assume that all clients will be using the latest version of IE on a windows
domain.
Thanks in advance.
MarkYou will need to write a multi-column report and the render the report using
Print Preview, PDF, or TIFF (multi column reports appear as one column in
Preview and the HTML renderers). See the follow topic for more information
about multi-column reports:

when I print it, I get all the labels in just one column. I've chaged the
page width to make it wide enough to discard size problems, I've also changed
column width, etc.
I just run out of ideas. Why can't I get both columns filled with labels?
Thanx

Mail Profile disabled in SQL Server Agent Properties

It's a Windows 2000 Server box with SQL 2000 on it. MSSQLSERVER &
SQLSERVERAGENT services are logged in as valid domain user. I set up a
mail profile for that user, and can send email via Outlook 2003.
However, when I go to the SQL Agent Properties in Enterprise Manager,
Mail Profile is disabled.

I've restarted the services & even tried rebooting the server. This
works on my other servers, but they're Windows 2003. Not sure if
that's the problem though.

Anybody have any clues?<brianhensley@.yahoo.com> wrote in message

Mail Delivery Fails--Please help!

We just set up Reporting Services on a new server can cannot get mail
delivery of reports to work no matter what we do. Errors appear in the log
like:
ERROR: Throwing
Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException:
The Report Server has encountered a configuration error; more details in the
log files, AuthzInitializeContextFromSid: Win32 error: 1355;
Info:
Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException:
The Report Server has encountered a configuration error; more details in the
log files
How do we resolve Win32 error 1355? The so-called details in the log files
are useless.

American Techsystems Corp.Larry,
I've encountered this same error with RS emailing reports. You should find
that when you try to email the report as an attachment or as MHTML in the
body you will get the error, but if you just send a link, you will get no
error. In my case, we were running Windows Server 2003 and there was a known
bug that was fixed in Server 2003 sp1. If you are running Server 2003
without the service pack, I would recommend installing it, and it should fix
your problem. Hope that helps.

Machine Resources

is SQL Server Reporting Services particularly demanding on machine resources
? I know, it's rather broad question, but your general input would be
appreciated ...
Thanks ....Yes, it's rather broad. This might help:

Mac/Safari - SQL Server Report, Collapse on left side

Hello,

We are using SQL Server Reporting services in our web application. When we view the report on IE/FF it works normally.
But when we view it on Safari on MAC/Windows the report is collapse towards left. It is not taking the width as provided.
When we view the PDF it shows the normal report.

How can this issue be solved ?

Thanks,
Deepesh Verma

Hi,

In Reporting Services, you use a Web browser to view reports and run Report Manager. Not all report functionality is supported by all browsers. The following table describes report functionality restrictions for the supported browsers.

Browser type

DescriptionMicrosoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0 for Windows, with all service packs applied and scripting enabled.Internet Explorer is recommended if you want to use all the available report functionality. Although you can use other browsers to view a report, Internet Explorer for Windows is the only browser that is guaranteed to support the complete set of features for working with reports.Netscape 7.2, Mozilla 1.7, Firefox 1.0.3, Safari 1.3, and Safari 2.0The following features are not supported in third-party browsers:· Document map· Searching within the report· Zoom· Fixed table headersThe following additional features are not available when viewing reports in Safari:· The Calendar control that is used to select dates on a parameterized report that runs on a report server has been disabled for Safari. Users must type the dates that they want to use.· Image source files that are retrieved from remote computers do not display correctly in Safari.· The client-side print control used for printing HTML reports.

If you are accessing a report server from a Macintosh computer, we recommend that you use Safari. Reporting Services does not support Internet Explorer 5.0 for the Mac.

Hello,

Thanks.

But any how we want it to work on Sarafi and we did it by putting a transparent image with the width we want to display.

And it worked for us.
