Maintenance Plan / BackupJob failed with error 17055

Hello all,
we work with SQL Server 2000 SP3 and we had a problem with our
Maintenance Plan. Even time we start the job, the job failed with error
17055. SQL Server Logfile writes :
BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write-Fehler auf Sicherungsmedium 'D:
\Programme\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\distribution
\distribution_tlog_200708240700.TRN'. Betriebssystemfehler: 112(Es steht
nicht genug Speicherplatz auf dem Datenträger zur Verfügung.).
The SQL Server Entry before the error was :
Internal I/O request 0x5B39A9C8: Op: Write, pBuffer: 0x11570000, Size:
983040, Position: 16259410432, UMS: Internal: 0x103, InternalHigh: 0x0,

m_actualBytes: 0, m_errcode: 112, BackupFile: D:\Programme\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL\BACKUP\distribution\distribution_tlog_200708240700.TRN
In the eventlog of the system the error 17055 occurs.
18210 :

\distribution_tlog_200708240700.TRN'. Betriebssystemfehler: 112(Es steht
nicht genug Speicherplatz auf dem Datenträger zur Verfügung.).
The filesystem where the transaction log is written has over 15GB free
space. So what is the problem?
Many thanks for Help.
PeterP.Nebermann,
If the file system on your D: drive is FAT32 then a 4GB file is the biggest
that you can write.

Could that be the problem?

I created a simple Maintenance Plan that backup my
Database every 12 hour and backup the log every 6 hour
so it's created 2 Jobs

the plan created the backup files (*.bak) but not the log

the "truncate log on checkpoint" is NOT on, in SQL 2000 a
Simple Recovery plan will not log transactions. Also, the

to do certain commands which will make the log backup
fail. Have to check those and look into why the option is
needed to be set on if it IS... or a log backup device is
blocked by something like a tape backup job?!? Bruce

Maybe the files can't be deleted due to being locked by
something like a tape backup?
You have Truncate/log on, so in the case a non-logged
command is executed, then I can see why that would cause
your log backup to have problems...
I'd look at each job step output first... Bruce

Maintenance job fails

Hi there,

Used the wizard to create a maintenance plan for a db. But it fails most of
the time. I checked the log-files.

At 1.00 AM, it runs the "Optimizations" job for 6-9 seconds. It succeeds
always.

At 1.05 AM, for 1 second, it runs "integrity check", but most of the time it
fails, and says that it couldn't switch to single-user because other users
are using the database.

And when "integrity check" fails the "backup" job won't run at 1.10 AM. When
it DOES run it takes 2 seconds.

How do I find out who is using the database ? How do I put a sp_who (or
similar) in the "integrity check" job ?
I got this tip:
----
Assuming you have SQL2000, then you can use something like this to
kick out all the users:

ALTER DATABASE foo SET RESTRICTED_USER WITH ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE

If you want to know who is using the database, then this is one way:

select suser_sname(sid)
from master..sysprocesses
where dbid = db_id('foo')
---

But how do I actually do it ? How do I edit a maintenance plan ?

thx
/jimYou don't have to edit the maintenance plan; you can either add a step
to the job before the maintenance plan runs, or create a new job that
runs prior to you maintenance plan.

Stu|||in EM, Managment> SQL Server Agent>Jobs > Properties > Steps . You will
see the steps, which you can edit or insert. I would imagine you could
insert a step before the integrity to do the commands you posted.
HTH|||I'm not sure I completely follow your series of events, but I would try
using multiple steps in a single job. In the first step, set the
database to RESTRICTED_USER; in the second, run your integrity checks;
in the third, run the backup; in the fourth, set the database back to
MULTI_USER.

If you do set this up, one common error is to set the Database in the
job steps to the user database, instead of master. If you don't choose
master, then the job can block itself.

Simon|||Guys

We seem to be missing the main point here. The maint plan is trying to
put the database into single user mode because you have ticked the
attempt to repair minor problems option for the database integrity
checks.

As the vast majority of times this check runs, it will find no errors,
a lot of sites consider this unecessary to do every night. An option to
consider is to remove this option, which solves your imediate problem.
Check the output from the maint plan regularly and if you do get any
errors, schedule a run of DBCC CHECKDB with applicable options at a
time when you can arrange to not have users on the system.

As for editing your maintenance plan. In EM open the management folder
and highlight Database maintenance plans. Double click the plan in the
right paine and you can now change it.

Hope this helps

John|||My trick is to schedule the maintenance right after my system is
recycled during the night.
That way, I dont have to deal with this nagging issue.

Does maintenance can reduce time to perform request ?

Does maintenance can reduce access time request ? Can I do maintenance when server is working ?

Maintance plan Problems

Hello, I've been having some problems with my Maintainance plan in SQL Server 2000. It will occationally quit working for days at a time. Sometimes it will do everything but back up the databases, and it steadfastly refuses to delete log backups over 6 weeks old (as I have asked it to). Anybody have any advice for me? Please, someone tell me the only thing to do is to take it out in the parking lot and kick it around. ThanksThere isn't anything else on the server (Win 2000), and its configured to stay powered up all the time. Theres also no significant traffic when its configured to run.

Maintaining a log for the users connected to sql server db.

Hi !

I need to maintain a record such as how many time any user (e.g, sa) connects to the sql server. Means whenever any person is connecting to the database through application or directly, then i need to know that through which sql user(e.g sa), any body connected.

Maintaining a Date/Time Last Updated Value

Using SQL Server 2000...
In support of a Web site's product catalogs; we will have at least two
tables [Products] and [ProductCatalogs].
The application needs to show the Date/Time any given product catalog was
last updated. For purposes of this "last updated date/time" value, we
consider the catalog as having been updated when [anything about the
catalog, itself] has been updated OR [any items presented in the catalog]
have been updated. This means one Date/Time value when either (1) the given
catalog's row in [ProductCatalogs] or (2) any associated rows in [Products]
have been updated. We do not need a complete update history - we only want
to know the last date/time an update happened to either the given catalog or
to any of the items presented in the catalog (and not any "per item" update
date/time).
One solution would be to have a column in [ProductCatalogs] of the DateTime
data type. The value in this column gets maintained by triggers on both
[Products] and [ProductCatalogs].
While that solution would work, I'd appreciate your perspective, opinions,
and alternatives - if any - before I go off and implement this.
Thanks! As far as I can see, you only need one datetime field on the table
ProductCatalogs. If you have only one way of updating your data (through
stored procedure) I would recommend implementing this logic in the stored
procedure. If not (or you think that someone could change data without using
sp) you would need to implement triggers.

Maintaing 10GB Database?

Hi Experts,

I'm trying to query data from a database of size 10GB. But it is taking too much time to get the data.

I'm uing SQL Server 2005, Xeon 4 processor Server.

The database sits on a single machine.

I don't have clear Idea about scaling.

Is it need to scale-out My database.>>>?

Please could you provide more information to help track down the problem? It will be difficult to track down the cause of the poor performance you are seeing without more information.

It would be useful if you could provide the definitions of your tables and indexes, examples of poor-performing queries and sample data. Also, an indication of the number of rows in your tables would be helpful.

You need to give us some more details so we can give you some useful answers. More details about the hardware, about what symptoms you are seeing, what type of workload that you have, etc.

If you read my blog post (below), it shows some easy steps for gathering some basic information about your hardware and your environment, that will serve as a starting point.

I need to set up a Maintenance Plan on a 6.5 DB. I know the version is old but the customer cannot upgrade at this time. Thanks for the help!!I need to set up a Maintenance Plan on a 6.5 DB. I know the version is old but the customer cannot upgrade at this time. When I try and run the wizard to set it up I get a warning about running a plan on a DB that is larger that 400MB. Whats the deal? Thanks for the help!!

As I recall (and it has been a while), one of the things that the maintenance plan will try to set up is an index reorg and (possibly) space reclamation. You don't want to touch either of these with your database. At least, I don't think you do. I would probably skip the maintenance plan wizard altogether and set up backup jobs to make sure your database is being backed up.

When I did this, I had to set up 5 backup devices (named FULL, 0600, 1200, 1800 and 0000). I then scheduled the full backup to write to the FULL backup device and four transaction log backups to write to the other four devices (at midnight, 6:00am, noon and 6:00pm). The backups would overwrite the files (so another process would have to copy the backup files to a remote location).

SQL 6.5. Ugh. It's the reason I drink so much now.

mail task

how to attach a xls file that will be created at run time using mail task. I get a file does not exist error if the file is not there.

If the file is not there, then obviously you would expect the task to fail.

If your are just having issues because at the start of execution the file is not there, but it will exist by the time the mail task actually runs, use the DelayValidation property. This will stop the mail task validating at the beginning of package execution, it will only validate immediately prior to the task execution, by which time you should have written the file.

Mail queued. Why and how can I get it to send?

Each time I test the email in SQL Server 2005 it goes into a queue. The mail
works fine in SQL 2000. There are about 25 emails in the queue and no
amount of configuring or dropping the DBMail accounts seems to be able to get
the queue to send.
example
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail
@.profile_name = 'SUPERHOSS',
@.recipients = 'jlongstreet@.Applied-Textiles.com',
@.body = 'The stored procedure finished successfully.',
@.subject = 'Automated Success Message' ;
Reply from the server "Mail queued." Everything appears to be configured
correctly. Exchange server name is configured correctly... default email
client has an account on the network that is configured to send... there is a
receive box that allows for a reply to address which is also configured.
The 2005 server is now live and it would be nice to have it send out job
failure notices. I'm not sure what it is that I am overlooking.

correctly. Exchange server name is configured correctly... default email
client has an account on the network that is configured to send... there is
a
receive box that allows for a reply to address which is also configured.
The 2005 server is now live and it would be nice to have it send out job
failure notices. I'm not sure what it is that I am overlooking.
Regards,
Jamieprobably as silly question. DBMail uses SMTP. Is it running and will your
Exchange server accept it?

Mail queued. Why and how can I get it to send?

Each time I test the email in SQL Server 2005 it goes into a queue. The mail
works fine in SQL 2000. There are about 25 emails in the queue and no
amount of configuring or dropping the DBMail accounts seems to be able to get
the queue to send.
example
EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail
@.profile_name = 'SUPERHOSS',
@.recipients = 'jlongstreet@.Applied-Textiles.com',
@.body = 'The stored procedure finished successfully.',
@.subject = 'Automated Success Message' ;

Magic Date?

Anyone know why 1899-12-30 is a special date?
If you put that date with a time in sql server EM and a vb call will return only the time portion...
More background and sample code
http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=30709In vb, the date is a floating-point where the integer portion is the date. 12/30/1899 is the base date. So if you enter a time only, the integer portion of the datetime will be 0 and the decimal portion will be the time.|||What's EM Built in? If you just enter a time through EM, it'll ne 1899-12-30...

And isn't 1900-01-01 the 0 date for sql server?

SELECT CONVERT(datetime,0,101)

???

And why, if you call sql server from vb through ado, does it pass back just the time component...with no conversion function?|||I wonder if there is a magic time, that just returns the date...

Why the original developer didn't use CONVERT is betond me...|||Do a query against that datetime column that only has a time and add 1 to it - your question will be answered.|||SELECT CONVERT(datetime,-2,101)
gives '1899-12-30 00:00:00.000'|||Originally posted by rnealejr
Do a query against that datetime column that only has a time and add 1 to it - your question will be answered.

What does that mean?

Datetime is stored as a number...4 before the decimal, 4 after...

What do you mean time only?|||So what does this prove?

SELECT DATEADD(d,1,CONVERT(datetime,0.1))

Add 1 what?

What do you mean with no date? There's always a date component?

0 is the default

(Unless of course you add through EM then it's -2)

huh?

And why, if you make a sql call from vb, and the date is 1899-12-30, it only returns the time..VERY bizzare|||Just had the developer do it from an Excel workbook too.

It puts just the time in the Cell with that 1899-12-03 date

It doesn't return the date...bizzaro

Anyone else seen this?|||http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27101

Hey Brett ... some more with excel problems ...

I believe the reason is that while SQL takes the default date to be 1900-01-01

and other MS applications use 1899-12-30

Here is a link
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnvbadev/html/whatisdatehowdiditgetthere.asp|||Thanks...forgot all about that thread...

Still doesn't explain you only get the decimal portion of the datetime field though (that's the time component)

LowLlevel Error

We see the below error from time to time as a popup message on the
desktop. The same error appears in the system event log as Source:
Application Popup Event ID: 26. We haven't been able to identify any
specific event which causes it to happen.
Start Error ----
Application popup: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library : Buffer overrun
detected!
Program: C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~1\MSSQL\binn\sqlservr.exe
A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's
internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must
now be terminated.
End Error ----
After the message appears, the running sqlservr.exe process is frozen
and clients can no longer access the database. Ending task from the
task manager doesn't even work and we have to reboot the server to get a
functioning SQL server service.
Anyone have ideas? I couldn't find much help with google. We are
running SQL Server 2000 with SP3.
